El CH-53K es un helicóptero de carga pesada, creado en el 2014, que puede transportar hasta 27.000 libras (122 toneladas) a una distancia de 110 millas náuticas, en comparación con las 19.000 libras que podía transportar el modelo anterior. Además, el CH-53K cuenta con un fuselaje más ancho que le permite transportar hasta el triple de carga internamente.
El CH-53A Sea Stallion, el predecesor del CH-53K, comenzó a entregarse en 1966 y estaba equipado con dos motores turboeje T64-GE-6. Las variantes del CH-53A se utilizaron para el barrido de minas y el transporte de cargas a través de depósitos de combustible externos. Por otro lado, su variante CH-53D fue ampliamente utilizado por la Infantería de Marina de los Estados Unidos.
El Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion, también conocido como Sikorsky S-95, es la versión más avanzada y de mayor capacidad de carga de los helicópteros CH-53. In addition, the CH-53K has a wider fuselage that allows it to carry up to three times as much cargo internally.
